Radar Detector Guide & F.A.Q.

How does a radar detector work?
A radar detector scans for radio frequencies transmitted by the police radar units or hand-held radar guns. The radar detector will give advanced warning so the driver is able to slow down before the officer is able to check the speed of the vehicle.

Are radar detectors legal in Canada?
  • Radar Detectors are legal in British Columbia (BC)
  • Radar Detectors are legal in Alberta
  • Radar Detectors are legal in Saskatchewan
  • Radar Detectors are illegal in Manitoba
  • Radar Detectors are illegal in Ontario
  • Radar Detectors are illegal in Quebec
  • Radar Detectors are illegal in New Brunswick
  • Radar Detectors are illegal in Newfoundland
  • Radar Detectors are illegal in Nova Scotia
  • Radar Detectors are illegal in Prince Edward Island
  • Radar Detectors are illegal in Yukon Territory
  • Radar Detectors are illegal in Northwest Territory
Can police detect my radar detector?
O.P.P. in Ontario, Quebec Police, and RCMP in eastern Canada use radar-detector-detectors (RDD) called Spectre. Spectre RDD will notify the officer if a radar detector has been detected near-by. Penalty includes a minimum fine of $170 in Ontario and $800 in Quebec, and the radar detector will be confiscated.
See below for a list of undetectable radar detectors.

Is there an undetectable radar detector?
There are currently 4 radar detectors that are undetectable to police Spectre RDD. They are recommended radar detectors for drivers in Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scota, and PEI.
What are the false alerts detected by a radar detector?
A radar detector will pick up signals emitted by motion sensors in automatic door openers. These signals have identical radio frequencies to that used by the police radar X-Band and K-Band. User will learn to differentiate a police encounter and false alerts within one week of driving with the radar detector.

My radar detector did not detect a police car. Is there something wrong?
If the police car does not have a radar unit, or the radar unit is not in use, your radar detector will not pick up any signal.

What are the police radar bands used in Canada?
  • Ka-Band - the most widely used radar band on the highways (34.7 GHz and 35.5 GHz)
  • K-Band - also very popular and widely used
  • X-Band - obsolete in most area; only used in remote or rural regions
  • LIDAR (laser) - while laser is not radar, there are increasing number of laser enforcement in BC, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, and New Brunswick. See below for a list of laser guns and laser jammers.
Can a radar detector detect police laser?
All radar detectors we carry on KMPH.ca are also laser detectors. However, police laser guns will not give any advanced warning, and if your detector goes off, it is already too late to adjust your speed. You need a Laser Jammer to defend against police laser.
What are GPS radar detectors?
Escort and Beltronics now incorporate GPS features to their flag-ship radar detectors. Functions include red-light and speed camera detection using Trinity Database, as well as marking locations to reduce false alerts. We carry the following models that include GPS functions:
I want a GPS Radar Detector that is also 100% undetectable. What choice do I have?
Unfortunately, there is no windshield mounted radar detector that offer both features. Your only option is a custom installed Escort 9500ci that is 100% undetectable and has GPS built-in. A much more affordable choice would be combination of a Beltronics STi Driver and Cheetah C50 GPS camera detetor.

Laser Jammer Guide & F.A.Q.

How does a laser jammer work?
A police LIDAR (laser) gun sends out IR pulses as the officer pinpoints the target vehicle. The laser gun then receives the reflected pulses and uses the timing data to calculate the speed and range of the car. It takes only 0.3 seconds to acquire target speed. A laser jammer equipped on a vehicle constantly scans for IR signals from any police laser gun. When hit by a laser gun, the jammer will transmit much more powerful signals back to the gun and prevent it from getting a measurement. The driver can adjust vehicle speed in the meantime.

Are laser jammers legal in Canada?
While there is no federal law that prohibits ownership or use of laser jammers in Canada, they fall under the same category as radar detectors in eastern Canada. The good news is that most modern laser jammers include secondary parking assist functionality, which allows legal use of the device if the driver strictly uses it as a parking sensor. See below for proper use of a laser jammer.

How do I use a laser jammer?
Drivers should quickly adjust their speed when the jammer is triggered by the police laser gun, and turn it off to allow the officer get a speed reading. There is no need for unwanted attention and hassle. We currently offer the best laser jammer Laser Pro Park from the UK and Blinder M27 M47 X-TREME from Denmark.

What police LIDAR guns (laser guns) are used in Canada?
The most popular laser gun used in Canada is LTI Ultralyte. Here are a list of laser guns:

  • LTI Ultralyte
  • LTI TruSpeed
  • LTI Marksman
  • Stalker LIDAR LZ1
  • Kustom Pro Laser 3
  • Laser Atlanta SpeedLaser
What is Laser Pro Park (LPP)?
Laser Pro Park is a UK-made laser jammer marketed as a vehicle parking assist. It features a powerful laser diode and a super sensitive photo-diode receiver for laser detection and jamming that yield better performance than LED jammers such as Escort ZR4 and Blinder. Laser Pro Park comes in two models - single-head and dual-head. Click on the links below for more information.
What are Blinder M27 and M47 X-TREME?
Blinder International is a company from Denmark that specializes on designing laser jammers. The Blinder M20, M40, and M25, M45 have been the best selling laser jammers in the US, and the latest Blinder M27 and M47 with much improved performance have just been launched in September 2009. The new models M27 and M47 also include a secondary function as a parking assist, with new Blinder Software Update using a USB cable if new threats become available in Canada and the US.
Does the laser jammer head(s) need to be mounted outside?
Yes. To jam a laser gun affectively, the jammer head(s) must have a clear view and cannot be obstructed by any object, including glass.

Should I buy Laser Pro Park Single-Head System or Dual-head System?
An LPP single-head can system can be mounted in the center grill and will be a ticket-saver for a small to mid-sized sedan. Mounting 2-heads in the front offers a better coverage for larger vehicles. One can also mount 1 head in the front, and 1 head in the back if rear-laser speed trap is commonly deployed in your area. Most laser hits in Canada and USA come from the front. The difference between a 1-head and a 2-head system is $300 (CAD).

How does Laser Pro Park compare to Escort Zr4 Shifter?
Laser Pro Park uses a ultra-sensitive photodiode receiver to detect narrow police laser beam, and fires back with a high powered laser diode. Escort Zr4 Shifter is a weaker jammer and does not jam Stalker LIDAR gun very well.

I do not want to drill holes on the dash or wire cables through the firewall. What should I do?
We offer Cheetah Wireless Fitting Kit for Laser Pro Park and Blinder X-TREME laser jammers, so the installation will be non-intrusive.
Can I integrate laser jammer with my radar detector?
The Escort ZR4 Shifter offers Shift-Link capability to communicate with current Escort and Beltronics radar detectors, which can provide visual and audio alert for laser jamming. However, we recommend better jamming systems such as Laser Pro Park.
