We published an article on Edmonton's speed enforcements and recommended radar and laser countermeasure a while back, and we will make one for Calgary as well! If you travel to other region as well, here are some existing articles and recommendations:
- Alberta Guide - general countermeasure
- Edmonton Guide - recommended radar laser defence
- Eastern Canada Guide - if you travel east into "banned" territory
Best Portable Radar Detectors for Calgary
There are 3 main criteria for buying a good radar detector for Calgary area.
- Good radar detection performance for highway driving
- Good false alarm filtering for city driving
- GPS camera database for intersectional red-light / speed camera
Uniden R3 - best long-range performance for Calgary
Uniden R3 DSP has been rated the best performing radar detector of 2017. Standard features include extreme long range radar detection, best false K-filtering, GPS "Quiet-Ride", false lock-out, camera database.
Uniden DFR7 - best performance under $400
Uniden DFR7 is the best performing radar detector under $400. With good detection range, likely more than adequate for most users, DFR7 gives you good filtering, GPS lock-out, speed-controlled "Quiet Ride", and camera database. Winner of "best bang for the buck" radar detector.
Escort Max 360 - directional arrows, and automatic GPS Truelock
While the Max 360 doesn't offer the same extreme long range performance as a Uniden R3, this Escort flag-ship radar detector is still a good all-around detector for some users. It features radar directional arrows, GPS Truelock with AutoLearn, and camera database.
Radenso Pro-M - small high performance detector
Radenso Pro-M, in contrast to a Max360, is the world's smallest radar detector. It features long-range radar performance with MultaRadar capability, with GPS camera database and speed controlled radar mute.
Best Laser Defence for Calgary
Handheld laser speed guns (LIDAR) are used frequently across Calgary and surrounding area. Even with the best radar detector, it may not be enough to warrant a save against a laser speed trap. This is where laser defence (jammer) comes in handy.
AL Priority Front Laser Defence
Most laser speed traps operated in Calgary area are handheld (or tripod mounted) targeting the front of vehicles. For this reason, one may only need front sensors for defence. For the best coverage, we recommend Triple Setup with 2 ALP sensors with 1 TX sensor. Read our sensor configuration guide for more details and recommendations.
Of course, for those who want peace of mind, or travel to Edmonton, then adding rear defence sensor pack is recommended.
